I split wood by hand when there was no other way. It just took one misplaced hammer blow to break the sludge handle. The plant I worked at tossed out a hydraulic trash compactor. I got permission to take it home. I made a splitter with the parts. It has a 5 hp motor and does a good job. I burn mostly eucalyptus which is a very hard wood.
