the Immigrants that settled the area brought their barn style with them (German, Dutch, English). If all the men on building crew were generally one ethnic group that's the style they built. Now if the crew lived in same area and built all the barns around the same time, it was easier to copy others already done for measurements and lay outs. If you helped in a neighbors barn you knew what room was what. The material is what ever was on hand. Lots of stones: field stone foundation, not as many stones block or poured concrete(newer barns sooner). If one barn was in a pine grove it most likely will be pine, oak in oak... and so forth.
