I'm going to preface this by saying I didn't watch last night, I haven't read anything other than a few headlines from outlets of both sides of the spectrum. I'm going to make a generalization here that "most" folks posting in here are older, white males.

Here is what I see as a 33 year old mechanical engineer with a family of 6. I did what I was supposed to do and got an education, I no have $40k+ in student loans that I'm paying on for 25 years. I was making good money and getting raises from the time I got out of school in 2005 to 2008 when I got laid off for a year. That wiped out any and all savings I had just to get by. Got rehired at a 25% pay cut but couldn't turn it down. Been back working for 5 years this month. I've had one, 2% raise after a year and 4 years without anything, not even a cost of living adjustment, despite the company I work for making record profits quarter after quarter. I'm a simple man, don't drive fancy cars or live in fancy new houses. I'm only on the second car I've ever owned and it's getting an engine transplant out of a wrecked car. Newest vehicle is 2002 with no payments. We were able to purchase a small property with a house and outbuilding with the assistance of my dad to help with down payment. The place we bought has some potential for making some income truck farming and selling eggs, chicken, pork etc into a niche market that doesn't want GMO fed meat and wants it raised humanely on pasture, not in confinements. I raise bees and we make a few extra bucks selling some honey. We garden, can, freeze, and rarely go out to eat. We don't have cable tv and the most basic internet we could get (kids need it for school). Wife doesn't work, doesn't make sense to pay daycare with most of what she would make working. At the end of the month I rarely have anything left. I don't know how I could buy a new car or anything extra beyond the basics.

Something in the system is broken. Doing nothing is not going to fix it.

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
