When I was a kid, was out in the back yard with my dog. A red fox came up over the cliff in the front yard. Neither of us saw him until he barked, more like a little yelp. Of course the chase was on! Dog was gone probably 1/2 hour, I could see the dog rustling in the underbrush, never saw the fox again. I suspect we were too close to the den, wanted to create a diversion. It worked!
