Besides not having a strong manufacturing base the south expected a short war and had a high desertion rate amoungst soldiers. The North had an endless supply of Irish immigrants coming into Ellis Island that could be drafted and sent to the war. For a century after the war the South acheived a great political advantage over the North. The South did not exaclty lose the Civil War even though a surrender took place.
