PICK UP THE PHONE and TALK to people. You have no idea what his tone of voice is. Your putting a lot of emotion into it with no idea what his is.
Offering $200 and putting a sob story on him is what's rude. Also very poor negotiating skills. I suspect the $5000 # was him being annoyed at your wasting his time.
Learn the art of verbal communication. It will put you way ahead of your peers who text and email only.
