I use PB blaster and a $10 wire brush kit you can get from Truck-Lite to clean the rust and green junk out of the plug.
Then I spray the clean parts with di-electric grease. The spray works better as it is not as prone to hydro lock and does not attract dirt as bad as the tube grease.
Then I tuck the wire end into the frame or cover it with a sandwich bag as to avoid direct contact with the outside elements.
