McCulloch hasn't been relevant in the saw industry in at least 30 years. They stopped developing new saws at the 10-series, and the rest of the industry passed them by. Everyone else went to quieter, lighter, saws with anti-vibration.
McCulloch exists today in name only. Someone bought the name and slaps it on generic Chinese consumer-grade saws.
Poulan has been out of the "real saw" business even longer than McCulloch. Again, someone took the name and slapped it on generic consumer-grade saws. I don't know why anyone would be surprised that a $200 big box special doesn't hold up and doesn't perform like a professional saw...
Most of the old manufacturers are long gone or relegated to leveraging their once-great names on box store junk.
Really all that's left is Stihl, Husqvarna/Jonsered, and Dolmar. Jonsered is just a Husky with red plastic instead of orange...
