The difference between the saws of yesterday and today is target market, more or less. McCulloch never made a "consumer" saw until they started getting into the Mini-macs and the saws of their later years. The 10-10, 7-10, Pro Mac 7 and 800 were professional grade saws intended to be used day after day for years. Stihl, Husky, Jred, Dolmar, Echo still make saws like that, but you aren't going to get one at TSC or Lowes. You aren't going to get one for under $500 either. Poulon used to make some pro grade saws, really nice saws actually. They shifted market focus and started making consumer grade saws. Many of todays "Husqvarnas" are rebadged Poulons. If it's got a primer and it's MSRP is under $600.00 it's a Poulan. Not that consumer grade saws are all bad. THey can do excellent work for many years but they need a different level of care than the old 7-10 or P-51 that would simply run and run and run and run with minimal maintenance.
Todays Mac is of lower grade than the stuff you can get at Lowes or TSC. They usually run for a few hours and live out their designed life span before something breaks or stops working. That designed life span might be 5 hours or 20 hours, who knows. When you can buy a brand new chainsaw for $150.00 or less just what do you really expect?
