The only way to stop the 14 hour clock is with 8 continuous hours in the sleeper only. That will stop the 14 hour clock, but then you need to add the 2 hours somewhere to complete your 10 and then after the 2 it gets really confusing because you can't excede the 14 without 10. So, I will use the 8 in the sleeper if I started my day early and get hung up at a shipper/reciever for close to 8 hours, that way I can drive til dark. But then I always shut down for 10 to clean it up so I don't have to worry about the 2. But to answer your question about stopping the clock for a nap to miss traffic, no you can't, the 14 keeps counting.
