I guess I'm not sure what you are talking about in reference to unemployment and welfare. Unemployment quits after 26 weeks now, it was extended for a couple of years, when things were real bad. And welfare, in this state ( Michigan ) is limited to women and children. Single folks, male or female, cannot collect. And neither one provides much $$$.
The biggest scam I know of is what a local cop calls the RRF guys - Redneck Retirement Fund, aka Social security disability. Almost everybody I know who worked as a carpenter or roofer, or siding guy, ended up on disability. Most never made a lot of money, most drank a bit, and they hit their late 40's or 50's, it's time to "cash in".
