I know wikipedia is not 100% accurate or the ultimate authority, but there are other sources on the web which indicate that using the "X" for Christ has been used for a long time and there is no disrespect implied (at least originally). My own church has the X superimposed over a P symbol on the alter.
I do agree that Christ is being removed from Christmas and it is commercialized, but we're doing that to ourselves. I don't think it is a result of people using "Xmas".
