Back when the batteries came dry, we added acid up to the fill ring. after they sat for a while the air bubbles came out and the plates soaked up so the level went down slightly. We refilled with acid & charged them up. If you add water it dilutes the acid & the voltage doesn't come up until it evaporates some water to get the SG up to what it should be. I never add water to a battery, only used acid from old batteries.
