I worked for the county Sheriff's office in 1973- Sheriff wanted us to carry all the time, on duty or off. I just had my service revolver, a Colt Python .357, and remember carrying it openly in a local shopping center in civilian clothes. Seemed to make everyone nervous- giving me a wide berth, mothers herding their little kids down a side aisle, etc. Seems like that would be even more of a problem today, what with the crazies. Also, carrying open, you become an obvious target for the bad guys wanting to steal a pistol. I still carry sometimes now, but always concealed.
Didn't stay with the Sheriff's office- left after 9 months, and was happy to get $200 for the Python, for which I had paid $150. Wish I'd kept it, but coulda, woulda, shoulda. Money was kind of tight at the time, too.
