I run 15" rows for beans that way if I plant in too much trash and have a short section of row that doesn't come up the rows beside will fill in. Criss-crossing your old cornrows will help so that you're not planting on a row of stalks thru the field. Otherwise I run a single coulter and make sure I'm in deep enough to get good seed soil contact. I also use the rubber press wheels. There are guys here that believe on planting shallow and have trouble getting a good stand in a dry year. By the way I have a 20 year old Black Machine with kinze 2000 units, it's not pretty but it didn't cost much and it does a great job getting an even stand. I've planted in brome sod that was burned down in the spring and worked fine.
