As others said, it's how tractors are built and marketed today.
Take a look at something like the test for the Massey 7618. It says right in the test report:
"The performance figures on this report are the result of replacing the electronic engine control module of the Massey Ferguson 7616 with the Massey Ferguson 7618 module".
They send one physical tractor to the test site and just swapped the control modules to test the performance of the entire series.
