Reminds me of one instance in my childhood. Even though we were urbanites, grandma/pa were rural folks. It was after Christmas and I had my little camp axe (present) with me looking for anything to chop.
Grandma said that we were going to have fried chicken for lunch and told me to get my axe and come along. We went to the hen house and she smartly grabbed up a big fat white hen.
Went out back and there was an old tree stump that had numerous wear marks. I got to chop it's head off and watch it flop about, then help with the plucking, and I forget the rest, even the eating part.
Think of it often when passing chicken fast food stores as to how times have changed.
