Hard starting Ford 1700 Stable I do some work for has a Ford 1700 loader tractor with around 800 hours on it. Dash indicator light for glow plug comes on when activated. Problem is it take minutes of cranking to get the tractor started. Was in the 60's today so the block heater wasn't on. New 1000 amp battery can only last so long. (new 2 gauge cables too ) Engine is definitely getting fuel when cranking as evident from the smoke coming out of the exhaust when cranking. Last two times it was started, ended up putting a set of jumper cables from my truck on it to keep it cranking long and fast enough to finally start. Know its getting close to starting when a small flame comes out of the stack, eventually it catches and the rpms come up above cranking speed and its good to go unless you stall it or you shut it off. Runs fine otherwise. Bill

Flames coming out the exhaust right before it finally decides to start sounds like it might be a timing issue, like the injectors are firing just a hair too late to make it start easy, but not far enough out of time to keep it running once it does start.

It won't start up again when it is hot - run it a while, shut it off, and try to start it within a minute? That would be a puzzle, glow plugs are the obvious thing to check, but would not be needed to restart when it is hot?

Check glow plug for being bad.Hook test light to power disconnect wire on glow plug probe terminal on glow plug if test light lights plug is bad Traper
