A dropping resistor will pass full voltage when not under load (Points open). This means that the meter is not a substantial load and the resistor effectively passes full volts. If the points are closed, there will be no voltage applied at all. The resistor, measured with an ohm meter, will measure around 2 to 3 ohms. A 12v coil for a resistor system will state (on box or printed on the side) for use with an external resistor. When no resistor is used, a 12v coil will indicate no external resistor required (it is wound with more and finer wire to operate in 14 volts). Jim
