Is all the manure surface applied, instead of knifing it in? With the dairy I always hired an applicator that knifed it in and took manure samples. Had to insist that he hold it down to 5000 gallons per acre. That supplied all the fertilizer for corn, with half of the total being available the first year. Knifing in eliminates the smell because the N does not gas off. Knifing also took care of tillage, but there is a machine that can be used on hay ground without disturbing sod too much. (Aerway).
