George, there is a tapped hole on some Touch-Control strainers that is used as a temp gage port.
I know my SA pump 'talks' when cold, but it quiets fairly quick. I can't remember what oil I put in it - before it was rebuilt, it went through it too fast to use anything expensive. Now that it's tested and tight, I'll have to go for the good stuff.
