I would venture to say your original shifting forks had removable/replaceable plastic tips on them that made them wider and they improved the new forks. I've seen plastic tips on many shift forks years ago. Good thing you did not try to press out the shifting rails. What your Son found is a shift inhibitor which keeps you from putting the transmission in more than one gear at the same time. (Keeps two rails from moving at the same time)
