Here most tire shops won't touch a widow maker, cage or no cage. Place my wife works won't touch them and they sell and repair most sizes and types of tires. The owner says his insurance company barred him from fixing those.
On a side note. Not only did I witness more than one split rim blowing up I can't begin to count the number of cages I've seen that were mangled from tires blowing apart when the lock ring failed. I had to investigate one blowing up when I was the accident reporting and safety NCO as an additional duty. The soldier inflating a split rim didn't use a cage and instead turned the ring side down and then sat on the tire. When it blew it threw him about 50 feet head first into the blade of a dozer tank. Really bad situation. Soldier dead, one SGT down the tubes for not supervising his soldier both the PSG and LT with promotion stopping documents in their permanent records.
IMO they just are not worth the risk. I would not want someone being injured or killed because I was too cheap to replace a set rims.
