You need to understand the concept of entropy, which is the state of disorder in a system. Any time you convert energy, entropy increases, which is why there's never a free lunch. Jeremy Rifkin wrote a book titled "Entropy: A New World View" back in 1980, which was highly prescient of the situation we are now in: consumption of resources continuing to accelerate worldwide with potentially cataclysmic consequences.
You are correct that the best strategy to reduce energy consumption and its consequences (resource depletion and pollution) is simply to conserve it. But there is very little penalty today for wasting energy. People had a fit over the elimination of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs; imagine the noise they would raise if they were expected to cut their individual energy consumption in half.
