Ive seen one coil explode. It was 45 years ago in farm mechanics school. Six volt tar filled coil hooked up to 12 volts. Switch was left on with engine not running for awhile. He hit the starter and BANG! A cloud of blue smoke rose to the ceiling and the guts of the coil were sticking six niches out the top of the coil. Made a nice display of what the inside of a coil looks like.
