Drain a little oil and put a magnet in it. if it collects a fuzz of metal it will be best to do as you are going to, that is, pull the top off and see where the self destruction is located. Ring and pinion, carrier bearings outside bull pinion bearings, and inner axle bearings are suspect. If balls fall out, the gears will trap a ball and break the rear housing. Jim
