We have a plant around here called high bush cranberry, grows wild, and the berries are kind of pinkish and really tasty. We were camped in a state park with many such bushes, and my kids (2 to 5 years old) were picking and eating them. Many well intentioned people stopping by- "those might be poison"!, trying to stop the kids from eating them, even to the extent of physical restraint. I finally had to bring my lawn chair over, and administer a little education to the ignorant masses. We finally picked enough that Auntie Carolyn (my sister) made a very tasty cobbler.
Only upside of the ignorance of the masses is that if they knew anything, the berries would have long since been gone.
