My father-in-law never locked his overhead gas tank. No one ever bothered it. One day he pulled in the lane and caught the township road commissioner, who was a splendid citizen, filling up a 5 gallon can from his tank. The road commissioner was a nervous wreck, having been caught, and insisted that Bill look inside his front door, which was also never locked, for a five dollar bill for the gas. (Gas was 30 cents a gallon then) The money was there, and they had years of fun with the story. The road commissioner had ran out of gas around the corner past the lane. He lived a few miles down the road, and thought he could make it home on an empty tank.
