It seems most new varities are bred to be planted at high populations,Seed companies get to sell more seed.More profit for them.more expense for farmers.With high populations you are screwed in a drought.Back when I was planting corn I planted a Funks varity that would make two large ears,and the seed wasnt expensive.Sure the yields wernt what some get today but what about the bottom line profit? Whith corn price down to $3,how cheap you can produce it is more important than tremendous yields.Back in the 2011 drought some farmers never picked their corn,but with lower population they might have made some crop,at least they would have less expense.Are there any open pollenated varities which make decent yields?I understand that crazy rent some pay changes things.
