Spray it with Roundup before you do anything else. A pint of roundup in ten gallons of water will do the job for 1/2 acre but you'll have to let it regrow a little first to get a decent kill. Let it regrow for two weeks or more and spray it.
You can plow it without killing it first but you will have some grass growing back up through the plowing. Then you'll have to deal with it again.
