You can look for evidence of malware without installing new antivirus.
Task Manager will allow you to view all the processes running on the machine. Look for those which are using a lot of CPU, and those which you don't recognize. You can also monitor network activity in real time.
The netstat command will tell you a great deal about the PC's network activity. It has many options that can be used in combination to get different reports. "netstat -h" will tell you all the options.
If you want to get real serious about monitoring network activity, consider loading Wireshark. https://www.wireshark.org/ Wireshark can capture every byte traveling in or out your network connection. Note that it creates very large capture files, so you can't use it for more than a few minutes at a time. Interpretation of the network capture files requires some knowledge of networking protocols.
