I did some searching on the GM Recall Center, and they had a recall for her '03 Impala - recall # N140350. I was disappointed to see that the Repair Description for this recall stated: "Dealers are to install two key rings and key cover on all ignition keys free of charge".
That's not gonna fix my wife's problem. We've discovered that we can flip the key to the "start" position, usually once or twice, and the AC and cruise will both run. (It's against my upbringing to twist to the "start" position with the engine running, but the starter does NOT engage) I'm hesitant to tackle changing the switch myself. I've heard horror stories about passkey problems after a switch change, so I'm going to have my son do it for me. He has flashing capabilities at his shop.
