I have a 8N (6 volt) to plow snow with. Last winter was one for the record books around here (northern Indiana). The tractor sat outside and I did not use a battery or block heater for starting - never have.
I do use fresh (winter) gasoline. Winter gasoline is blended for higher vapor pressure than the gasoline sold during the summer months. For tractors used everyday this is typically not a problem however, if the tractor is seldom used it can very well have a tank full of gasoline that was purchased during the summer, lower vapor pressure. Buying your gasoline a month or so after the cool weather arrives should insure you have the winter blend. The tractor starts on gasoline vapor - the higher vapor pressure gasoline aids cold starting.
