Horse and man power - the best use of the man power would be to get on a shovel and start digging.
My dad put us boys on the end of a shovel several times rather than let us hook up to a bigger to tractor to pull us out of the mess we had gotten our selves into. 3-4 hours of digging in mud and breaking your back digging under a tractor made you a LOT more careful where you were going. Wasted a lot of time making us dig but probably saved him a lot of time and money on repairs in the long run with the lesson learned.
