Yes, the JD model E is a good starter engine.
I just got a 3 hp E running today for the first time in 60 years. We wanted it to do something, so it is mounted on the rear of a purpose built 3 wheeled motorcycle parade toy. Front fork / mag wheel, front frame is a 400 Yamaha, seat is a steel plow seat, rear axle is a Ford 8 inch with ET mags with 10 inch wide tires.
The model E engine, being JD, exhausts into the mandatory 6 inch X 4 ft chrome stack. Transmission is a 48 Ford truck 4 spd crash box. Will run it at the local threshing show next weekend.
