A definitive YES... a window unit will cool better! Husband and I both agree on that.
We had two 10,000 BTU portable units (bought them brand new)... had them exhaust out the windows - one upstairs one on main level.
Gave both to our daughter and bought an 8,000 BTU window units to replace them.
Window unit keeps it as cool if not cooler because it's not fighting itself (those portable units through A LOT of heat INSIDE your house) and one does not have the hassle of emptying the water out continually... the portable was literally filling a five gallon bucket with water DAILY.
While one does not have to empty them -- I believe they will only run on "dehumidify" until the water level in the reservoir goes down (they won't cool).
