After working for two years as a hospital aid for $2,500.00 a year, we decided to come back to SD to farm. I was 21 years old, it was 1955. I bought a brand new "60" John Deere with a 801 three point hitch and a remote cylinder for $2,230.00. It was a '54 model held over to '55 because nobody wanted the wide front! Next came four daughters, we have four, and hail and drought. I about wore it out custom plowing with a mounted 813 3-14's plow. We somehow made it - with God's help.
