In North Carolina, when you purchase a vehicle, you must not only show that you have insurance, you must provide the policy number and it is printed on the registration card that is carried with the vehicle. All sales and use taxes are collected either by the dealer, or, if purchased from an individual by the license plate agency. The same applies for tag renewal. Vehicle must pas inspection prior to tag renewal, and if insurance lapses, DMV is notified and you can lose your tags as well as your driver's license.
