In my case it just depends on the job. In my 5 acre yard with dozens of trees I use the mower that is the exact width of the tires, so I can run the tire to the edge of the tree and cut without damaging the tree or the mower.
In my pastures I use the bigger mower, wider than the tractor, lots of space, mows much faster.
