I used to buy gas at a Walmart station. It was always like a 3 ring circus and not unusual for someone to come up and say they had run out of gas just down the street or where ever and could I give them some money for gas. Don't think I ever contributed to their cause.
Happened a lot. Then I noticed NOT ONE ever had a gas can. Without a gas can, how were they going to get the gas to the car??? Then I got smart and started buying gas somewhere else.
Yes these folks were there in a vehicle and their story seemed true, but you don't know.
Working downtown, I run into all kinds of panhandlers. Some of them really look pathetic. Years ago I had a police officer tell me that many of these "pathetic" looking folks drive downtown in their Cadillacs, change into their "grubbies" and go panhandling. He told me some of them make $60,000/yr all cash.
Don't feel bad, you have to be a good steward of what God has given you. If you want to give, make sure its going to a good place.
As far as driving, you made the right choice. You may have "broken" the law, but you probably saved you and your son from injury and your vehicles from damage.
