37Chief: I am glad you and your tractor where not hurt/damaged. We all have done similar stuff. I find I do more of it as I get older just because getting back on the tractor is harder/hurts more than it used to.
As for your JD 401 starting when not in park. I am willing to bet that yours is early enough model that it will start if the "range" lever (left shifter) is in neutral or park. IF yours does not have the add on kit on the dash that makes you have the "speed" lever (right shifter) in 1st to get the left shifter into park then it will start in neutral.
This was not changed until the very late 30 series utility tractors. Then they had to be in park to start. The actual shifter rail is different.
