OK, thanks to all the replies, I decided to start with the 8 volt battery. I had the generator in the shop for new parts and set the cutout for 8 volts also. That wasn't too smart, should have been 9 volts but I will correct that later. Have 00 cables on both positive ground and negative to starter. Although it is a shortstop repair it is what I needed till this winter when a complete overhaul will be attempted. Thanks guuys for all your input.
