I'm guessing the "local man" is probably Turner Kirkland he's the guy who was behind Dixie Gun Works, Interesting a town that size is/was home to Turner Kirkland and Jerry Gurien, who was a big player in the stone washed jeans process. They used to have a Goodyear plant but it closed. I hear Titan tire has purchased or rented the tire plant for storage. The big employer in town is now Tyson Foods. Kohler makes shower enclosures there, Lear-Siegler used to make car and truck seats there and Stay-right pump had a plant there also.
