For me, it depends on the cattle and the situation. If the cattle are naturally aggressive, breeding, calving, strangers are present, or some other stressing situation, a dog does make the situation even worst. But a dog can also act as a rodeo clown to draw the animal's attention.

In normal conditions when the cattle are relaxed and docile, I prefer the dog not be around to spook them. For me, the same goes for dogs around hogs or sheep. I find things go smoother if a dog is not around when I'm working with animals. It might be different if the dog was a good herd dog and the animals are very used to having the dog around, but I've never had that.

I will cull out overly aggressive animals.
