I once owned '53 Super M. The battery WAS under the seat. The addition of factory live hydraulics required the battery be moved to under the seat, because the hydraulic reservoir took up residence under the tank.
It is possible I suppose that the live hydraulics were NOT ordered on that particular tractor, and the old style belly pump was installed instead. If that were the case, then I suppose it would be possible for the battery to still be under the tank, but I would rather think that what you looked at is NOT a true Super M. It might be a "mutt", put together from several different tractors, and "Super M" decals applied. I would look it over very carefully and compare the casting codes.
