First time I got chiggers/red bugs I was told to put a drop of finger nail polish over the center of each spot. If you don't use clear you'll look a bit strange, but the color really doesn't matter. I was told that the polish cuts off air to the chigger, causing it to die rather quickly.
I've had them a few times over the years, once in a rather sensitive area, and the polish trick has worked every time for me. Too, something about it seemed to make the spot stop itching. Might be worth a try for you if you haven't done it already.
