I am growing that variety, too in N Central Ark. It may be a fungus, but I am not sure. Mine seem to like only a small amount of soil moisture and keeping the soil cultivated to get more oxygen to tthe roots.
One thing I found out the hard way is that seed germination and sprouting is severely hampered by too much moisture, so I don't even water them until they are well established and the leaves are curling up. HTH
