I started in a one room school in Richland County, OH in 1949. The school kitchen was the oil burner that heated the building. Everyone brought a dinner bucket from home, if you had home canned soup, etc. it could be heated on the old oil burner. The township schools were closed and we moved into the town school system in 1953. During grade school our cook was Mrs. Howard White, an old farm wife. Those meals were GOOD! Got to High School and meals were not so good. Fortunately I had a Norton motorcycle, so I'd ride downtown to Horners Tavern. I could get a really big meatloaf sandwich and a bowl of baked beans for $.35. Gas for the Norton was $.27 a gallon and I had an hour for lunch so I could get a good ride in.
