We only had school lunches in 6-8th grades. Was pretty nasty and kids on free lunch were known because they didn't pay cash, they had tickets they handed the checker. It was a status symbol to bring a bag lunch. This was in the 60's.
When my kids were still in school, 80's and 90's that's how they were able to tell who was on reduced or free lunch. The kids who's parents could afford it had their kids brown bagging it. And amazingly there were status symbols in the baggers. Name brand juice drinks and Hostess deserts were the big things.
So I don't think you ever get over the haves and have nots.
