for the miles you would be putting on it I think that it would be doubtful that you would ever see the diesel pay you back for the higher price. So far as the shifting the question is how many intersections and what do you have for hills. On a one hour round trip with hills and intersections an automatic can knock ten minutes off. If it is flat and open you probably won't gain any with an automatic.
